Measuring

Measured for a Perfect Fit

SmartBlock™ blinds are custom-made to fit your windows perfectly, so getting your measurements right is key to achieving true blackout performance. But don’t worry – our clear, step-by-step guides make it easy, even if you’re not a DIY expert. In fact, many customers go from measuring anxiety to tape-measure boss within minutes Whether you’re fitting your blinds inside the jamb for a clean, built-in look, or outside the jamb due to shallow jambs but still ensuring maximum light block, we’ve got you covered. Download our detailed PDF guides below, or follow the on-screen instructions for the most common option: inside the jamb. Prefer to leave it to the pros? We also offer an optional measuring and installation SERVICE for added peace of mind

Measure in 3 steps

1. Measure Width for Perfect SmartBlock™ Fit

With your trusty tape measure in hand, start by measuring the internal width of the window jamb where your SmartBlock™ blind will be installed For the most accurate result, measure the width in three places: at the top, across the middle, and near the bottom of the opening. Windows aren’t always perfectly square, and this simple step helps you catch any variations. Use the smallest of the three measurements – this ensures your SmartBlock™ system will fit neatly inside the frame for a flawless, sealed finish Make sure the tape is held level, and measure from inside edge to inside edge (wood to wood). If you're measuring a wide window or door, now’s a great time to call in a second pair of hands – sweeten the deal with the promise of dinner if needed! Record the smallest width in millimetres. This is what we’ll use to custom-make your complete blackout blind for the perfect fit

2. Measuring the Drop for Your SmartBlock™ Blind

Getting the drop (height) measurement right is just as important as the width – especially when it comes to achieving a true blackout result with your SmartBlock™ system. While we include a little extra fabric on the roll, an accurate drop ensures your blind fully seals the window from top to bottom, with no gaps for light to sneak in Using a tape measure, measure from the top inside edge of the jamb to the bottom inside edge (wood to wood), holding the tape straight and perpendicular to the sill. Double-check your reading and note it down in millimetres This precise measurement helps your SmartBlock™ complete blackout blind do exactly what it’s designed for – completely darken the room, eliminate light bleed, and deliver the comfort and privacy you’re after

3. Ready to Get a Quote?

Click ‘Get a Quote’ and enter your SmartBlock™ blackout blind measurements as width × drop in millimetres (mm). If you're booking a check measure later, or just want a ballpark price before committing, feel free to enter approximate dimensions for now Before any order can be finalised, we’ll need your exact measurements. Supplying accurate sizes ensures your custom blackout blinds are made to fit perfectly – maximising light control, privacy, and insulation

FAQS

Q.

What makes SmartBlock™ different — and better — than other blackout blind systems?

A.

SmartBlock™ improves on standard blackout blinds with a complete system that includes a fully enclosed cassette box, side channels, and a sealed bottom rail. This advanced design eliminates light gaps for a true room-darkening effect — ideal for bedrooms, media rooms, and shift workers

Unlike many blackout blinds, SmartBlock™ is engineered for performance and style, with precise light control, optional motorisation, and a sleek finish. The result is a high-performance blind system that outperforms traditional roller blinds in both function and appearance

GET A QUOTE

A.

SmartBlock™ uses a combination of side tracks, a top cassette, and bottom sealing to completely enclose the blind. This stops all outside light from entering the room, unlike standard blackout blinds which often let in light around the edges

GET A QUOTE

A.

SmartBlock™ blackout blinds are always supplied as back-roll — it’s the only way the system works. The cassette box and side channels are engineered so the fabric drops from the back of the roll, sitting close to the window frame to seal out light

With a front-roll setup, the fabric would sit forward of the side channels, creating light gaps and defeating the blackout design. By using back-roll only, every SmartBlock™ blind delivers its full 100% blackout performance without you needing to specify a roll direction

GET A QUOTE

A.

Thanks to the innovative cassette housing and side channels, SmartBlock™ blinds offer superior light blocking, eliminating the common gaps around the edges of standard blinds. This advanced design provides the best blackout performance available in New Zealand, ensuring your rooms stay completely dark even during daylight hours

GET A QUOTE

A.

The cassette box houses the blind fabric neatly at the top, while the side channels tightly hold the fabric edges, preventing light from leaking around the sides. Together, they create a complete light barrier, unlike typical roller blinds that only cover the window area. This design ensures no gaps, no light seepage, and a sleek, modern look

GET A QUOTE

A.

Yes, SmartBlock™ is specifically designed to deliver complete blackout performance. Thanks to a fully enclosed system—featuring side tracks, a headbox cassette, and bottom sealing—SmartBlock™ eliminates light gaps around the edges for total darkness. Perfect for bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms, or shift workers

GET A QUOTE

A.

Yes — while SmartBlock™ blackout blinds are designed to deliver total darkness when fully closed, you still have full control over how much light or air you let in by simply adjusting the blind

If you want natural daylight or ventilation, just raise the blind partially or fully — just like a standard roller blind. Then, when it’s time for complete blackout (for sleeping, shift work, or movie watching), lower it fully and the sealed cassette, side channels, and bottom rail will block out external light and create a dark, thermally efficient space

This flexibility makes SmartBlock™ perfect for bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms, and day sleepers who want to toggle between bright and blackout as needed — without compromising on performance or privacy

Designed for maximum blackout when closed. Custom light control when open

If you are a tenant asking: Yes. They can be installed with minimal impact and removed cleanly if needed. Just check with your landlord or property manager before making changes. When removing you may need to putty and spot paint the screw holes

If you are a property owner asking: Yes, why not. The SmartBlock™ blackout blinds with side tracks are a more expensive solution, when compared to standard blackout blinds, however tenants may well be happy to pay more for thoughtfully placed blinds with complete blackout benefits

GET A QUOTE

A.

Yes – SmartBlock™ can be custom-sized for wide sliding doors or ranch openings up to 3000 mm wide using the chain-driven or motorised options. The side channel system creates a seamless blackout barrier across large spans. For very wide panels, consider splitting into two blinds for easier handling and better performance using our more standard custom-made blackout blinds without the SmartBlock™ system

For sliding door installations, you’ll need a solid timber jamb or other sturdy surface along the bottom to secure the low-profile bottom channel – it’s designed to step over easily without being a trip hazard. You can’t leave the ranch slider open with the blind fully closed, as wind pressure will cause the fabric to bellow out and pull from the channels, causing damage to your SmartBlock™ system

It’s also important to check your available jamb depth to ensure the cassette and side channels fit correctly — see the How do I know if my window jamb is deep enough for SmartBlock™ blackout blinds? FAQ for details

GET A QUOTE

A.

The maximum size depends on the control system you choose:

  • Chain-driven SmartBlock™: Up to 3000mm wide × 3657mm drop

  • Motorised SmartBlock™: Up to 3000mm wide × 3657mm drop

  • Cordless SmartBlock™: Up to 2438mm wide × 3048mm drop – plus, with cordless blinds the height can’t be more than four times the width (1:4 width-to-height ratio)

Fabric choice can also dictate the maximum width. Many fabrics can accommodate the 3000mm maximum, but some are limited to 2800mm or even 2300mm. You can check each fabric’s max width via the fabric name tooltip within the SmartBlock™ fabric selector page

For openings wider than a single SmartBlock™ blind can cover, consider splitting the span into two butting blinds using our more standard custom-made blackout blinds without the SmartBlock™ system

GET A QUOTE

A.

No — the SmartBlock™ complete blackout system is designed for single-blind installations only. It cannot be used with a dual roller blind setup or with two blinds butted together in the same opening. SmartBlock’s cassette box, side channels, and bottom rail require a continuous, uninterrupted frame to create the sealed light barrier that delivers 100% blackout performance

There's no practical way to fix the side channels securely in the middle of two butting blinds, without compromising performance, and the SmartBlock™ cassette isn't designed to accomodate two blinds, either in dual configuration or butting together

If you’re unsure whether your window opening can be covered by a single SmartBlock™ blind, check the guide on the maximum sizes available for SmartBlock™ blackout blinds, FAQ

While most blinds can be made up to 3000mm wide, some are restricted to 2800mm or even 2300mm wide due to the fabric width of your chosen fabric. You can confirm max fabric widths by hovering over the tooltip next to any fabric range name in the SmartBlock™ fabric selector

If you require dual roller blinds or butting blind setups – without the complete blackout performance of SmartBlock™ – you may want to explore our custom-made standard blackout blinds and/or our made-to-measure sunscreen blinds ranges instead. These offer more flexibility where dual roller blind configurations and butting blinds are needed

GET A QUOTE

A.

The minimum width depends on the control system you choose:

  • Chain-driven SmartBlock™: At least 305mm wide (and minimum drop 305mm)

  • Motorised SmartBlock™: At least 407mm wide (minimum drop 305mm)

  • Cordless SmartBlock™: 457mm wide (minimum drop 305mm) – plus, with regard to cordless blinds the height can’t be more than four times the width (1:4 width-to-height ratio)

These limits ensure your blind operates smoothly and maintains the sealed blackout performance SmartBlock™ is designed and known for

SmartBlock™ complete blackout blinds are custom-made to fit a wide range of window sizes — including extra-wide or tall frames — but they must be installed on standard rectangular or square windows

Because the SmartBlock™ system relies on precision-fitted cassette boxes and side channels to eliminate light gaps, it is not suitable for arched, circular, or other specialty-shaped windows. For the best light-blocking performance, a clean, square or rectangular opening is essential

SmartBlock™ complete blackout blinds are made by a specialist manufacturer who offers a fabric collection exclusive to the SmartBlock™ system. Our standard blackout blinds, on the other hand, are made in a different factory and use premium fabrics from Shaw, Uniline, or Texstyle — all highly reputable suppliers in the New Zealand blinds industry

Because these products are produced in separate factories, each with their own supplier partnerships, the fabrics available for SmartBlock™ differ from those in our other blackout blind ranges without the SmartBlock™ system. This allows us to pair each product with fabrics that the factory can source reliably, ensuring consistent quality, long-term availability, and the best performance for the product design

Most SmartBlock™ fabrics are available up to 3000mm wide, though some are 2800mm and a few are 2300mm. Check the fabric width tooltip in the fabric selector when choosing your fabric to ensure it suits your window size

SmartBlock™ blackout blinds are available in three control options — chain-driven, chain-free (spring-loaded), and motorised. Each option has distinct advantages, depending on your window placement, budget, and preferences. Here's how they compare:

Chain-Driven Blackout Blinds (Standard Option)

  • The most popular and cost-effective choice

  • Ideal for DIY installation and retrofitting

  • Includes a child safety clip, but maybe not the best option for young children's bedrooms

  • A practical choice for standard-sized, easily accessible windows

Chain-Free (Spring-Loaded) Blackout Blinds

  • Features a clean, chain-free appearance with no visible control chains

  • Safer for homes with young children or pets

  • Operated by using the handle secured to the bottom rail to raise or lower the blind

  • Best suited to windows within easy reach

  • A minimalist option that suits modern interiors, bedrooms, and nurseries

  • Same price as the above chain-driven standard option

Motorised Blackout Blinds

  • Offers the highest level of convenience with remote-controlled operation

  • Perfect for large or hard-to-reach windows or rooms where daily manual adjustment isn’t practical

  • Powered by a motor with rechargeable battery — no electrical wiring required

  • Professional installation recommended, but confident DIYers can definitely manage as well

SmartBlock™ blinds are available in a chain-less, spring-loaded option—a clean, modern choice for those wanting a chain-free blackout blind with no dangling control chains. However, before selecting this option, here are a few things to consider:

  • Ease of Use: The blind is operated by gently pulling the handle on the bottom rail to raise or lower it. This works best when the window is easily reachable, both top and bottom

  • Height Matters: If your window is tall or positioned high on the wall, the chain-free option may not be practical—motorisation may be a better fit in those cases

  • Stopping Points: The blind can be stopped at any height, but unlike a chain-driven or motorised system, fine-tuning the exact position can take a little more practice

  • Clean Finish: With no chains or cords, this is the most child-safe and clutter-free manual option available—ideal for bedrooms and nurseries

  • Durability: Like all SmartBlock™ options, the spring system is robust and built to last with regular use

The depth of your window jamb determines how your SmartBlock™ complete blackout blind can be installed — and there are three main fitting options: inside fit, semi-inside fit, or outside fit

  • Inside fit gives the sleekest look, with the cassette box front flush with your architrave. For this approach, you’ll need at least 86mm jamb depth for the smaller 89mm cassette or 99mm jamb depth for the larger 114mm cassette

  • Semi-inside fit is ideal if your jamb depth is limited. The cassette will protrude slightly, but the finish is still neat and tidy. You’ll need at least 62 mm jamb depth for the 89mm cassette or 68mm jamb depth for the 114 mm cassette

  • Outside fit mounts the blind on the architrave around the window — perfect when your jamb depth is too shallow for the other options

Your SmartBlock™ cassette box size depends on your blind’s width and drop. This can be tricky to work out without guidance, so when sending in your window measurements for a quote also let us know your jamb depth so we can confirm the best option for your windows

The fully enclosed cassette, side channels, and sealed bottom rail create a tight insulating barrier that reduces heat transfer through your windows. During summer, SmartBlock™ blinds block solar heat gain to keep your space cooler. In winter, they trap warmth inside, reducing heat loss and the need for extra heating

This thermal insulation effect leads to greater comfort indoors and can lower power bills, making SmartBlock™ blinds an excellent choice for energy-conscious homes across New Zealand

SmartBlock™ blackout blinds are engineered for longevity. With normal daily use and proper care, you can expect the system—including the cassette, side channels, and blackout fabric—to perform reliably for 10 – 15 years or more. The aluminium hardware is powder‑coated for durability, and the premium blackout fabrics are UV‑stable to resist fading

For added peace of mind, every SmartBlock™ blind comes with a 5‑year product warranty (and 3 years on motor components), covering defects in materials and workmanship. Routine maintenance—such as light dusting and occasional spot‑cleaning—will help maximise the lifespan and keep your SmartBlock™ blinds looking and operating like new

Yes — SmartBlock™ blackout blinds are designed with safety in mind, making them a great option for homes with children or pets

You can choose a completely chain-free configuration (either manual or motorised), eliminating dangling cords or loops that can pose a hazard. This makes SmartBlock™ a child-safe blind solution that meets modern safety standards

For households with curious toddlers or active pets, the enclosed cassette and secure side channels also help prevent little fingers (or paws!) from getting behind the fabric, ensuring long-term durability and peace of mind

SmartBlock™ blinds are low-maintenance. A regular light dust with a soft cloth or vacuum soft brush attachment will keep them looking great. For the fabric, spot-clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent—avoid harsh chemicals or soaking
